| The Story Back in the 60's Cuba had won its revolution, Bolivia, Peru and Argentina had pro-cuban guerrilla movements, other social movements were growing trough out Latin-America too. In Chile Mr Allende lead a huge Social movement he would later be elected president of Chile. University students and young intellectual searched for an authentic Latin American identity. I wouldn't know who and exactly when it started, but solo singers like Victor Jarra and Violeta Parra traced the path in Chile. Their worked to recover native pre-Columbian roots and incorporated Indian melodies into their music. Soon, others followed their example. small bands, mostly university students of five or six members started doing music playing indian guitars (Charango), standard acoustic guitars, indian flutes (quena), panpipes( zampoña) and indian drums ( bombo argentino). They would too interpret and restyled indian music and traditional songs. A new concept was born; they would go as far as to go to live in the mountains to compile music. They started a new tradition of musical research. Two groups become very popular; "Inti Illimani" and "Quilapayún". Both very engaged against social injustice. When violent and bloody Pinochet's Dictatorship arrived (1973), some of them were awfully killed (Victor Jarra and many anonymous musicians) some of them were deported to Europe others simply escaped to Latin-American countries. None of them were allowed to return to Chile. Like once the Gospel, new Latin-American music spread in to the continent and the world. Some of the like Inti Illimani lived for years in France and evolved their music almost to the perfection. Others followed the path inspired in the same tradition and quality like "Savia Andina" in Bolivia. Others mixed it with rock like Jaivas; others started with pure folk and evolved to a romantic-ballade-folk style like Kjarkas. The story continues, next time you see my peers playing on the street of big city, think that every started in the late 60's with Victor Jara, Violeta Parra, Inti Illimani and Quilapayun |
